The three-story, six-unit tenement building at 631 Sterling Place in Crown Heights, owned by Mohammad Uddin, has experienced several concerning maintenance issues in recent years, particularly regarding heat and hot water systems. Most notably, there were two heat/hot water complaints in late 2024 - one for the entire building and one for a specific apartment - though HPD was unable to access units for inspection in either case.

In January 2024, multiple violations were documented in Apartment 1R, including issues with carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors, and an excessively high water temperature (over 130 degrees), along with bathroom water leakage and defective plastered surfaces. These violations were eventually certified as resolved in February 2024, along with the heating issues. The building has also faced some compliance challenges, with two active Department of Buildings violations (as of June 2023) regarding the failure to file external low-pressure inspections for 2018 and 2019.

While the building has generally passed recent rodent inspections (including June 2025), there was one instance of rat activity noted in May 2023, though subsequent inspections have been passed. The building remains subject to an open bedbug report filing requirement, with violations documented in 2023 and 2024 for failure to submit the mandatory annual report. A locked egress violation was inspected in July 2020 but was found not to warrant a violation at that time.
