204 Sumpter Street is a 4-story, 8-unit New Law Tenement building located in Bedford-Stuyvesant and constructed in 1910, currently owned by Marc Katz. The building has recently experienced multiple maintenance concerns, with the most significant issues occurring in June 2025, when multiple complaints were filed regarding paint/plaster conditions, fire escape safety, mold presence, and garbage/recycling storage problems.

While the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) investigated these complaints, they determined that the conditions did not violate the housing laws they enforce. Prior to these incidents, there was a heat/hot water complaint for the entire building in December 2024 which could not be verified due to lack of access, and several garbage/recycling storage issues were noted throughout 2023, some resulting in housing code violations. The building has had some notable security and maintenance violations in 2023, including issues with self-closing doors and unauthorized encumbrances in public areas, such as flower pots and motorcycle storage on the first story.

These violations, along with others involving broken glass and plexiglass concerns at the entrance, were documented and generally addressed, with many being certified as corrected by August 2023. On a positive note, the building has maintained a clean record regarding bedbug infestations for multiple years between 2020 and 2024, with no reported cases. However, there have been consistent rodent activity reports, with inspections in 2025 and earlier in 2018 showing evidence of rat activity, indicating an ongoing pest control challenge that appears to persist despite some inspections showing compliance.
