The two-family house at 483 Vermont Street in East New York, owned by Geneva Pate, has shown significant safety concerns in recent years.

Most notably, in June 2023, the building was cited for two open Housing Maintenance Code violations in the second-floor apartment: one involving a defective ground fault circuit interrupter (G.F.C.I.) outlet near the kitchen sink, and another concerning missing carbon monoxide detecting devices throughout the apartment. The property underwent a serious compliance issue in late 2018 regarding unauthorized cellar modifications, with multiple violations documented that December concerning improper use of the cellar space, including unpermitted living spaces, plumbing fixtures, and an unlawful cooking space.

While these violations were eventually certified as corrected in February 2019, a subsequent Environmental Control Board violation in April 2020, with a $6,250 penalty, indicated continued noncompliance with a previous order regarding the unlawful use of cellar spaces and fixtures, plus an additional $1,250 penalty for occupancy violations.
