The two-family house at 153 York Avenue in New Brighton, owned by Kenneth Colacino, has experienced a series of concerning maintenance issues in early 2025, with multiple complaints filed through the Housing Preservation Department (HPD) between January 23-24 and February 1. These complaints, most of which were not able to be inspected due to access issues, include reports of unsanitary conditions related to pests and mold, significant water leak problems (both heavy flow and slow leak), flooring and stair issues, and inadequate heating/hot water systems.

While many of these complaints have been closed, they were primarily closed due to inspection access issues, with HPD suggesting tenants re-file complaints if problems persist. The building, constructed in 1931 and consisting of four units over two stories, has an inspection history from 2021 revealing several maintenance violations in Apartment 2.

These included both Class B and C violations related to broken plaster surfaces, defective ceiling materials, loose door issues, plumbing problems, and electrical concerns. Notably, there were documented issues with roof leaks affecting both Apartment 2 and the public hallway/stairs, as well as concerns about exposed wiring in one of the rooms. While many of these violations were marked as closed with certified repairs by October 2021, the recurring nature of water-related issues and the recent wave of complaints in early 2025 suggest ongoing maintenance challenges in the building.
